Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise at the age of a little girl. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay was first introduced to the film West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. Her mother was also a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to convey messages by means of art. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay used her summers in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news as a student. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house for a specific Jury member. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay started her career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from college. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. The agency was the first to launch a variety of promotions and lifestyle channels, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
